Genetic Testing for Personalized Mental Health Care
Genetic Testing for Personalized Mental Health Care
Genetic testing is a clinical tool that looks at key genes related to medication response, metabolism, and—sometimes—risk factors for certain psychiatric conditions. In our virtual clinic, we use evidence-informed genetic information to help tailor medication choices and reduce the time spent trying multiple treatments. Think of it as one more piece of data in your care plan: not a diagnosis, but a guide.
Why we offer it
Faster, smarter medication decisions. Genetic results can help your clinician choose medications and doses that are more likely to work for you and less likely to cause side effects. Personalized care, delivered virtually. We integrate test results into telehealth visits so your treatment plan reflects both your clinical history and your genetics—no extra in-person visits required.
What it can and can’t do
- Can: Inform medication selection (metabolism, likely side effects, drug–gene interactions), reduce trial-and-error, support shared decision-making.
- Can: Inform medicatiCan’t: Definitively predict every treatment outcome, replace clinical judgment, or provide a complete picture of your mental health (environment and life history matter a lot).on selection (metabolism, likely side effects, drug–gene interactions), reduce trial-and-error, support shared decision-making.
How it works (simple steps)
- Pre-test discussion. We’ll review what the test can — and cannot — tell us, address privacy/consent, and confirm that testing is clinically appropriate for you.
- Sample collection. Most tests use a cheek swab or saliva kit that we ship to your home (or you can use an approved local draw option).
- Lab analysis. Samples are analyzed by accredited laboratories and results are returned to our clinicians.
- Telehealth follow-up. We explain results in plain language, update your medication plan if needed, and answer your questions.
Who might benefit:
- People who’ve experienced multiple medication failures or severe side effects.
- Those starting psychiatric medications who want a more personalized approach.
- Patients and families curious about medication metabolism or drug–gene interactions.
Privacy & consent
Your genetic information is treated with the highest confidentiality. Testing is only done with your informed consent. We use accredited labs, follow data-protection standards, and will discuss how results are stored and who has access.
